Seasonal Walking — Best Times to Visit
Discover when the coastal trails truly come alive. From spring wildflowers to autumn's golden light, each season offers something special along the Jūrkalne bluff and Užava lighthouse routes.
Why Timing Matters on Coastal Trails
Walking the same path in April feels completely different than walking it in October. It's not just temperature — the whole experience shifts. Wind patterns change. Light angles differently. Plants are blooming or dormant. The number of people on the trails varies wildly.
We've spent years walking these routes through every season, and there's honestly a best time for almost everyone. If you're planning a visit to the Jūrkalne bluff edge or the Užava lighthouse area, knowing what to expect month by month makes all the difference between a mediocre walk and something you'll remember.
Spring: Renewal and Unpredictability
March through May brings something magical — new growth everywhere. The dune grasses start greening up around mid-April. By May, wildflowers are scattered across the bluff edge. You'll see birds returning, and honestly, the whole coast feels alive again after winter.
But here's the catch. Weather's unpredictable. One day it's 15°C and sunny. Next day? Rain and wind. We're not exaggerating — spring weather changes hour by hour sometimes. Pack layers. Always.
Best for: People who don't mind variable conditions and want fewer crowds. Photography enthusiasts love spring light.
Summer: Peak Season (June–August)
June to August — this is when everyone comes. Temperatures sit around 18-22°C. Days are long (sunset near 10 PM in June). The Jūrkalne bluff is fully green, the lighthouse path is well-maintained, and yes, it's crowded.
Summer's the safest choice weather-wise. You'll encounter families, groups, and other walkers. Rest stops are staffed. Facilities work properly. But if you want solitude, summer isn't your season.
- Warmest temperatures
- Longest daylight hours
- Most crowds
- Best for groups and families
Autumn: The Sweet Spot
September through November — this is actually our favorite time. Temperatures are cool (12-18°C) but manageable. Crowds thin out significantly after August. The light gets golden, especially in late September and October. It's stunning.
Autumn dune grass takes on golden and reddish tones. The whole landscape looks like it's glowing. Weather's generally stable — not as erratic as spring. You'll need a decent jacket, but you won't be overheating while walking uphill.
Best for: Photographers, walkers wanting space, people who like cooler temperatures without extreme cold.
Winter: For the Determined
December to February brings extreme solitude. Temperatures drop to 0-5°C. Wind gets serious — coastal wind in winter isn't a gentle breeze. But if you're prepared, winter walks are incredibly peaceful. You might see nobody for an hour.
The landscape's stripped down. Dune grass is dormant and gray. The Užava lighthouse stands out starkly against winter skies. There's something honest about it. Not pretty in the traditional sense, but powerful.
Winter requires proper gear — windproof jacket, warm layers, good boots. The rest facilities have reduced hours. But if isolation and dramatic coastal scenery appeal to you, winter delivers.
